Through our social commitment platform, Mission Every One, Macy's is committed to operating with integrity and fostering a more equitable and sustainable future. As part of that commitment, Macy's issued a Chemical Policy aimed at eliminating unwanted chemicals from its Private Brands products managed by Macy's Sourcing team. The Policy leverages industry expertise to identify chemicals of concern and to determine their presence in the company's Private Brand materials, products or production processes.

To ensure the removal of unwanted chemicals, the company implemented a Private Brand Restricted Substance List (RSL). The RSL applies to the majority of our Private Brand apparel, footwear and soft home products managed by Macy's Sourcing team, including materials, parts and other goods. The RSL goes above and beyond US regulatory requirements, banning or restricting the use of substances identified as hazardous to customers, workers or the environment. The list includes, but is not limited to azo dyes, flame retardants, phthalates and perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFAS). The RSL standards apply to finished goods and raw material vendors including, but not limited to, factories, mills, dye houses, trim suppliers, cut and sew facilities, laundries and printers. Limits and de-minimis amounts are based on industry standards. Macy's follows the AFIRM Group RSL and updates annually.

Macy's Private Brand products may carry a number of third-party certifications related to chemical safety. OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 verifies that products have been tested for harmful substances using a list of up to 1,000 chemicals. OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN provides a traceable product label that supports environmentally friendly production and safe working conditions in addition to testing for harmful chemicals. Products bearing these certifications meet Macy's chemical policy.

Macy's has also introduced a Manufacturing Restricted Substance List (MRSL). This list focuses on restrictions related to input chemistry for manufacturers, establishing corresponding requirements for output and wastewater.

As guidance Macy's references the Zero Discharge Hazardous Chemical Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (ZDHC MRSL). The ZDHC MRSL is a list of chemical substances banned from intentional use by manufacturers processing textile materials and trim parts in textiles, apparel, leather, and footwear.

Macy's expects suppliers to:

Review, research and understand MRSL

Actively work to eliminate restricted chemicals from their supply chain

Understand and adhere to ZDHC wastewater guidelines

Macy's is committed to monitoring industry chemical stewardship and updating standards regularly to incorporate evolving manufacturing chemistry, government regulations, industry best practices and scientific advances. Questions regarding the please e-mail [email protected].
