Consumer companies fell sharply as traders braced for tariff impacts.

The recent trade deal with Vietnam would likely force many U.S. retailers to cut earnings forecasts because the 20% tariff rate imposed on the nation by the Trump administration was higher than trade groups had anticipated, analysts said.

A wide range of clothing imports are made in Vietnam, but Deckers Outdoor, Crocs, Lululemon and Tapestry are among those with the largest exposure, said analysts at brokerage Bank of America Securities.

Discounter TJX is poised to keep drawing customers away from department stores, said analysts at brokerage UBS.
