U.S. defense firm Northrop Grumman and Norwegian ammunition company Nammo reached a deal with the Lithuanian government to produce ammunition in the Baltic country.

The two companies and the Lithuanian government signed a memorandum of understanding agreeing to produce medium-calibre ammunition at the Giraite Armament Factory, the Lithuanian government said Tuesday.

Northrop Grumman and Nammo will provide the Giraite plant with technology and expertise to produce 35mm ammunition. The factory will be integrated into Northrop Grumman's international supply chains, and the U.S. company will be able to supply ammunition produced there to international markets.

The deal should lead to negotiations with Northrop Grumman and Nammo for the establishment of a new facility in Lithuania for the production of medium-calibre ammunition for the Lithuanian Armed Forces, the government said.

The agreement comes as Europe, and the Baltic countries in particular, seek to strengthen their armed forces to deter Russia from any potential attacks against their territories, following Moscow's large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
