Key takeaways
T-Mobile US has decided to eliminate all programs related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The decision comes as the company awaits approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for two major transactions.
In a letter to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, T-Mobile US stated that it would end its DEI initiatives “not just in name, but also in substance.” This includes dismantling dedicated DEI roles and removing all references to DEI from company websites and employee training materials.
In line with Trump’s position
The announcement is in line with the Trump administration’s stance against DEI programs. After his inauguration, President Trump revoked long-standing rules intended to promote equal opportunity and a diverse workforce based on characteristics such as race, gender, and religion. FCC Chairman Carr, appointed by Trump, subsequently launched investigations into various companies.
Similar decisions in the industry
This decision by T-Mobile US may also be related to something else. The company is still awaiting approval for the acquisition of nearly all mobile operations of United States Cellular for $4.4 billion (€3.7 billion), as well as for a joint venture with investment firm KKR to acquire internet service provider Metronet. Telecom giant Verizon recently received FCC approval for the acquisition of Frontier Communications for $20 billion (€17 billion), after it had ended its own DEI program.
