Tesla has begun production on its Cybercab, a car without pedals or a steering wheel key to its vision for autonomous robotaxis, Chief Executive Elon Musk said.
The company will use the car, which will operate with Tesla's Full Self-Driving software, in its driverless ride-hailing service and sell it to taxi fleet operators and the general public.
The Cybercab has been a priority for Musk, who is attempting to transform Tesla from a traditional car company to one focused on autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots.
Tesla is designing the production line to make hundreds of Cybercabs a week, The Wall Street Journal previously reported. Musk has said that the Cybercab could have a material impact on Tesla's financials by the end of this year.
The company will need approval from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to sell the Cybercab, since it lacks a steering wheel, pedals and side mirrors. NHTSA grants exemptions to automakers to sell vehicles not fully in compliance with the rules but caps their numbers at 2,500 cars a year.
