Sydney, Australia, Apr 23 (EFE).- Microsoft on Wednesday announced an investment of AU$25 billion ($18 billion) through 2029 to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure, representing its largest financial commitment in the country.
The announcement was made by the company's CEO, Satya Nadella, during a visit to Sydney as part of his global AI tour, alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
According to the statement released by the American company, the investment will significantly expand Microsoft's cloud computing and AI supercomputing capacity in Australia, with plans to increase its local infrastructure by more than 140 percent in the coming years.
The project also includes new commitments in cybersecurity, with the expansion of collaboration between Microsoft and the Australian Signals Directorate, as well as strengthened cooperation with the Department of Home Affairs to protect critical infrastructure and government systems.
Furthermore, the company plans to train 3 million Australians in AI-related skills by 2028, in what it described as the largest technology training program of its kind in the country.
The plan also includes collaboration with the Australian AI Safety Institute to assess risks in advanced systems and promote the responsible use of these technologies, in line with government priorities.
As part of the agreement, Microsoft signed a memorandum of understanding with the Australian government to align with its objectives regarding data centers and digital infrastructure, including the use of renewable energy, water sustainability, and local job creation.
Australia has intensified its commitment to AI as an engine of economic growth and modernization, aiming to position itself as a key player in the development and safe adoption of these technologies.
In this context, in early April the government announced an agreement with the Anthropic to promote investment and responsible development of AI in the country, as part of its National AI Plan launched at the end of 2025. EFE
