Teradata (NYSE:TDC) delivers shareholders stellar 29% CAGR over 3 years, surging 4.4% in the last week alone

The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But if you buy shares in a really great company, you can more than double your money. For instance the Teradata Corporation (NYSE:TDC) share price is 113% higher than it was three years ago. How nice for those who held the stock! On top of that, the share price is up 16% in about a quarter. The company reported its financial results recently; you can catch up on the latest numbers by reading our company report.

Since the stock has added US$163m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During three years of share price growth, Teradata moved from a loss to profitability. Given the importance of this milestone, it's not overly surprising that the share price has increased strongly.

The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 11% in the twelve months, Teradata shareholders did even worse, losing 21%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 1.0% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Teradata better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for Teradata you should be aware of.
