Baidu and Uber are teaming up to deploy thousands of the Chinese company's autonomous vehicles across global markets on the ride-hailing app's platform.

The companies said Tuesday that the partnership will increase the supply of affordable and reliable ridesharing options by bringing Baidu's robotaxi unit onto Uber's network.

The first deployments are expected in Asia and the Middle East later this year.

Terms of the partnership weren't disclosed.

"We are committed to bringing the benefit of autonomous driving technology to more people in more markets, and this partnership with Uber represents a major milestone in deploying our technology on a global scale," Baidu Chief Executive Robin Li said.

The company's robotaxi unit, Apollo Go, has a fleet of over 1,000 fully driverless vehicles across 15 cities globally, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The unit is gaining momentum and accelerating its global expansion, having provided more than 11 million total rides to the public as of May, Baidu said.

"This partnership brings together two of the world's most iconic technology companies to help shape the future of mobility," Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said.

American depositary recipts of Baidu rose 4.8%, to $90.02, in premarket trading. Uber's stock price ticked 1.2% higher, to $95.05.
