Woodside Petroleum Ltd. has completed the drilling of its first oil well at its jointly-owned Sangomar Offshore and Sangomar Deep Offshore site in Senegal, Societe des Petroles du Senegal, or Petrosen, said Saturday.

At the S540 oil reservoir, the Australian oil-and-gas firm covered a net length of about 500 meters to a depth of about 2,600 meters, with results coming in above expectations, Petrosen said.

The oil field--which is owned in a joint venture between Woodside and Petrosen--has reserves estimated at 630 million barrels. In August, Woodside said the four wells have a capacity to produce 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day, and remain on track to begin oil production in 2023.
