New York Times : A Promotion for Abe Sater

NYT

Abe Sater has been promoted to senior production coordinator. Abe joined the newsroom's video team in 2012, and from the start has brought deep technical expertise, sharp instincts and innovative drive to our work. Abe has distinguished himself as a masterful facilitator across production. In his new role, Abe will build upon his work, presiding over our video studio operations, including production spaces, equipment, maintenance and upgrades. Abe maintains an unblinking eye on video technology and will bring that to bear on refreshing and advancing our capabilities.

Abe is a proactive and effective member of the team who has worked to expand video's technical capabilities over the years. He took the lead on building our studio spaces on the 2nd floor. It was a multi-year project and Abe managed all components throughout, collaborating with Facilities, Audio, Photo and numerous other stakeholders. He has also served to coordinate our equipment purchases, and overseen storage and management. In 2019, he drove a project to sell some unused equipment, raising over $22,000 for Neediest Cases.

Abe has been indispensable to our Live video work. After contributing to development of our updated systems, he was hands-on in producing our 2020 election coverage, which featured unprecedented components such as closed captioning and on-screen graphics. As the newsroom has increased its focus on Live, our daily live video publishing has dramatically increased, with Abe continuing to support the team.

In his new role, Abe will work closely with our department's director of cinematography and other lead editors to equip our team both out in the field and in the office. Abe collaborates and consults with innumerable colleagues around The Times, and he will continue impacting a wide range of projects and ongoing work.

Some additional thoughts from Steven McElroy:

I've had the opportunity to work with Abe a lot, including on Project 620 several years ago. He is a great colleague; smart, organized and always willing to pitch in and help even when something extends beyond the boundaries of Video. In addition to the central role he played in the creation of our new studios, Abe was vital in helping to get the new Page One room and newsroom screens up and running too, and has been helpful in a thousand ways since then. I can't imagine certain projects, like Election Night in the newsroom, without Abe and his wonderful ability to stay positive and even-tempered at all times.

Please join us in congratulating Abe.
