Apple (AAPL) has announced a series of new sustainability initiatives in India aimed at expanding renewable energy infrastructure, tackling plastic pollution and supporting green entrepreneurship, according to a company press release issued on May 7.
The company said the initiatives are part of its broader target of becoming carbon neutral across its entire global footprint by 2030.
As part of the programme, Apple will partner with renewable energy developer CleanMax to help develop more than 150 MW of new renewable energy capacity in India. Apple said its initial investment of INR100bn ($1.06bn) will support projects capable of supplying electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of around 150,000 Indian households, with scope for further expansion in the future.
The renewable energy projects are intended to support Apple’s efforts to increase the use of clean energy throughout its supply chain in India. The company had previously collaborated with CleanMax on rooftop solar installations powering its offices and retail operations in the country with renewable energy.
Apple is also strengthening its environmental efforts through a partnership with WWF-India to improve waste recovery and recycling systems. The initiative builds on existing work carried out with waste management organisation Saahas Zero Waste in Goa and will now expand to additional regions including Coimbatore.
The programme focuses on setting up collection, sorting and recycling systems with traceability measures designed to prevent plastic leakage into local ecosystems. Apple said the initiative would work closely with local authorities, waste workers and communities to strengthen circular waste management infrastructure.
In a separate initiative, Apple has partnered with impact investment organisation Acumen to provide catalytic grants and mentoring support to six early-stage enterprises working in waste management, regenerative agriculture and circular economy solutions.
The company highlighted previous collaborations under Acumen’s Energy for Livelihoods Accelerator, including support for ventures such as Saptkrishi, which develops low-cost cold storage systems for farmers, Yotuh Energy, which manufactures electric refrigerated trucks, and MOWO Fleet, which promotes women-led electric mobility entrepreneurship.
Apple said its latest India-focused initiatives align with its wider environmental strategy. According to the company, it has reduced global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% from 2015 levels while increasing revenue by 78% over the same period.
