US energy firm Sempra expects its Energia Costa Azul (ECA) liquefied natural gas export terminal in Ensenada, Baja California to begin production in June, ahead of reaching substantial completion this summer, the company announced, Argus Media reported. The 3.25mn t/y facility has until September 21 to begin exports under its US Department of Energy licence.
The terminal began receiving feedgas on April 20 and took around 27mn cubic feet per day between April 24 and May 4, though it has not yet produced LNG.
The project will re-export US natural gas sourced predominantly from the Permian basin of west Texas and New Mexico, placing its export authorisation under US federal jurisdiction. Long-term offtake agreements are held by TotalEnergies at 1.7mn t/y and Mitsui at 800,000 t/y.
