Airbnb's California AB 1305 Disclosure
Published December 2024
Introduction
Airbnb began purchasing carbon credits in 2021, and we plan to gradually increase our purchases as we approach our 2030 net zero goal (as described in greater detail on page 6 of this AB 1305 disclosure) to address any in-scope emissions we do not eliminate by that time. We use the term "carbon credits," also commonly referred to as "carbon o sets," to mean credits of avoided or sequestered (removed) greenhouse gases denominated in metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. We believe that carbon credits, especially nature-based solutions, are valuable tools that can allocate critical investment in the ght against climate change while also helping achieve climate goals by o setting residual emissions companies are not able to reduce. While we purchase carbon credits, we do not currently apply these carbon credits to the emissions gures we disclose.
The below information provides more detail on the credits used (i.e., retired) in
scal year 2023.

§ 44475.2: Disclosure Information Related to Airbnb's Emissions Reduction Goals and Progress
In 2021, we announced a goal to operate as a net zero company by 2030, reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with our global Scope 1, 2, and 3 corporate operations and investing in quality solutions to o set residual emissions, including those with a focus on nature-based solutions. The speci c categories of emissions included in our corporate net zero goal are Scope 1, Scope 2, and the following Scope 3 categories de ned by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol: 3.1 Purchased goods and services, 3.2 Capital goods, 3.3 Fuel- and energy-related activities (not included in Scope 1 or Scope 2), 3.5 Waste generated in operations, 3.6 Business travel, 3.7 Employee commuting, and 3.8 Upstream leased assets). As noted above, while we purchase carbon credits, we do not currently apply these carbon credits to the emissions gures we disclose.
Airbnb established a target, validated under the Science Based Targets initiative ("SBTi") near-term criteria, to reduce Scope 1 and 2 (direct emissions from stationary combustion and refrigerants and indirect emissions from purchased electricity, diesel generators and district heat, respectively) absolute emissions by 78.4 percent by 2030 from our 2019 baseline.1 As of December 31, 2023, Airbnb achieved an approximately 82 percent reduction of Scope 1 and 2 absolute emissions compared to our 2019 baseline, largely due to our continued matching of our o ce electricity use with 100 percent renewable energy purchases. The methodology we use to measure our Scope 1 and 2 emissions, including relevant estimates and assumptions, is set forth in Airbnb's management assertion and the report of independent accountants, dated September 6, 2024, available here.
Our SBTi-validated near-term target also includes a goal of reducing Scope 3 emissions intensity (MtCO2e/$1 million gross pro t) by 55 percent by 2030 from our 2019 baseline. Alongside signi cant business growth from 2019 to 2023, Airbnb reduced our 2023 Scope 3 emissions intensity by approximately 55 percent compared to 2019. Scope 3 emissions intensity is measured using the economic intensity method as set by SBTi's Greenhouse Gas Emissions per Value Added (GEVA). The methodology we use to measure our Scope 3 emissions, including relevant estimates and assumptions, is set forth in Airbnb's management assertion and the report of independent accountants, dated September 6, 2024, available here. As noted above, Airbnb's Scope 3 emissions for purposes of this target only includes the following categories de ned by the GHG Protocol: 3.1 Purchased goods and services, 3.2 Capital goods, 3.3 Fuel- and energy-related activities (not included in Scope 1 or Scope 2), 3.5 Waste generated in operations, 3.6 Business travel, 3.7 Employee commuting, and 3.8 Upstream leased assets. Our "gross pro t" for purposes of this target is calculated as revenue minus cost of revenue as reported in Airbnb's relevant Annual Report on Form 10-K.
6
Our approach to measuring and disclosing our GHG emissions is informed by relevant frameworks and standards, such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol standards. To measure our emissions, we collect business activity data-such as data regarding our company spend, o ce portfolio, cloud usage, etc.-and work with Watershed, our third-party sustainability partner, to calculate the emissions associated with our business activities using emissions factors (as detailed in Airbnb's management assertion and the report of independent accountants). However, we recognize that approaches to the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions and any associated reductions, as well as underlying data availability and quality, continue to evolve; as such, both the data sources and methodology we use change over time to reflect updates we deem appropriate, including if necessary to our reporting boundary or baseline. Speci c changes to our methodology are noted in Airbnb's management assertion and the report of independent accountants, dated September 6, 2024, available here.
Airbnb procures limited assurance over our Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 metrics, as well as our Scope 3 emissions intensity, in each case as set forth in Airbnb's management assertion and the report of independent accountants, dated September 6, 2024, available here.
