The Federal Trade Commission sent letters to more than a dozen major technology companies advising them to comply with federal legislation about the removal of nonconsensual images.

Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson sent the letters, which demand compliance with the Take It Down Act by May 19, to prominent companies including Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, Meta, TikTok and others, the FTC said in statement Monday. The act was signed by President Trump last year and requires platforms to have a process for victims to request removal of intimate photos or videos shared without their consent.

The letters said the platforms must give clear notice about the removal process and must take down nonconsensual images within 48 hours of receiving a valid request, the FTC said. Platforms covered by the law include websites, apps and online services like social media and gaming platforms.

"We stand ready to monitor compliance, investigate violations, and enforce the Take It Down Act," Ferguson said. "Protecting the vulnerable-especially children-from this harmful abuse is a top priority for this agency and this administration.
