Alibaba Group launched Happy Oyster on Thursday, doubling down on its artificial-intelligence ambitions and joining Google in the foray into world models.

The launch comes just weeks after the Chinese company released an AI video-generation model that topped a global ranking. Happy Oyster can go beyond simple video generation to simulate physical reality that can be applied to video games and the film industry. Researchers also hope that the technology will make humanoid robots smarter.

"Unlike traditional AI video tools that follow a one-shot workflow of 'write a prompt, wait for rendering, receive a finished clip,' Happy Oyster keeps listening and responding throughout the generation process," its official website said.

The model is capable of generating videos up to three minutes long, according to Alibaba. This is significantly longer than a video generation model's usual 15-second clips.

Happy Oyster's launch comes at a time when AI players are exploring world models as AI technology evolves. Google has a world model, Genie 3, which uses simple text descriptions to generate photorealistic environments that can be explored in real time. Chinese AI video startup ShengShu Technology has also invested in world models.
