IN BRIEF: RWE starts wind farm construction in Rhenish lignite area

RWE AG - Essen, Germany-based generator of electricity from wind, solar, hydro, biomass, gas, coal and nuclear power sources - Starts construction on wind farm in Aldenhoven in the Germany's Rhenish lignite mining area, "on recultivated areas of the Inden opencast mine in the Duren district". Company is erecting six wind turbines with a total output of 34.2 megawatts, having won the contract from the Federal Network Agency in December. Says the turbines will be connected to RWE Power's transformer substation in the Inden mine and feed the electricity generated into the power grid via the existing infrastructure, with the electricity anticipated to cover around 24,000 households. Expects wind farm to be commissioned in the summer of 2025.

"Aldenhoven is another example of how well the energy transition is progressing in the Rhenish lignite area," says Katja Wunschel, chief executive officer of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia. "The expansion of renewables has accelerated significantly in recent years."
