IN BRIEF: Thales JV wins EU contract to support "life on Mars" search

Thales SA - Paris-based electrical systems manufacturer - Says Thales Alenia Space, its joint venture with Leonardo Spa in which Thales holds a 67% interest, has signed a framework contract with the European Space Agency "to continue essential activities" as industrial prime contractor for the upcoming ExoMars 2028 mission. The contract is worth EUR522 million and includes developing a Mars Entry, Descent & Landing Module plus maintenance on existing vehicles. The mission will deliver an autonomous rover scheduled to reach Mars in 2030 and which will search for evidence of extant or previous life. Thales adds that the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, built with Alenia Space as the main contractor, continues to orbit Mars and its operational life will be increased to support the 2028 mission.

"Thales Alenia Space's advanced technology, know-how and experience puts us at the forward edge of space exploration...We're ready for the crucial months ahead and confident in our ability to keep pushing the boundaries of universe exploration," comments Massimo Comparini, the joint venture's deputy chief executive officer.
