On Tuesday Constellation Energy announced that it has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Meta for the entire output of its Clinton nuclear power plant in Illinois. The US energy group said the agreement will power Meta's operations in the region by providing access to approximately 1,121 megawatts of carbon-free energy, while ensuring the plant's continued operation beyond 2027.The facility, considered one of the most efficient in the US nuclear fleet, was originally scheduled to close in 2017 due to financial losses. It was ultimately saved by the Future Energy Jobs Act, which secured funding through a zero-emission credit program until mid-2027.The contract with Meta will ensure the plant's continued operation for another two decades without public support. The project also includes a 30-megawatt capacity increase for the site through technical improvements.According to Constellation, the agreement will preserve some 1,100 local jobs and guarantee $13.5m in annual tax revenue for local communities. For Meta, this is another step toward its goal of powering 100% of its operations with renewable or carbon-free energy.Copyright (c) 2025 CercleFinance.com.
