Starpharma Holdings (ASX:SPL) Shareholders Have Enjoyed An Impressive 108% Share Price Gain

The last three months have been tough on Starpharma Holdings Limited (ASX:SPL) shareholders, who have seen the share price decline a rather worrying 36%. But that scarcely detracts from the really solid long term returns generated by the company over five years. In fact, the share price is 108% higher today. Generally speaking the long term returns will give you a better idea of business quality than short periods can. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap now.

Starpharma Holdings wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last 5 years Starpharma Holdings saw its revenue grow at 5.5% per year. Put simply, that growth rate fails to impress. So we wouldn't have expected to see the share price to have lifted 16% for each year during that time, but that's what happened. Shareholders should be pretty happy with that, although interested investors might want to examine the financial data more closely to see if the gains are really justified. It may be that the market is pretty optimistic about Starpharma Holdings.

A Different Perspective

Starpharma Holdings shareholders gained a total return of 16% during the year. But that return falls short of the market. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 16% per year over five year. It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
