Union Pacific Railroad has agreed to a seven-year contract to use steel rail from Rocky Mountain Steel Mills.
Union Pacific said the partnership underscores its commitment to buying steel from domestic manufacturers. It has used steel rail from Rocky Mountain Steel since the early 1890s, the company said.
Rocky Mountain Steel, a Colorado-based steel-rail manufacturer, expects to begin operations at a new rail mill this year, funded by more than $1 billion in investment, the companies said. The mill will be powered by an 1,800-acre solar farm, they said.
The new pact between the companies ends pending legal disputes between them, the companies said. Union Pacific has withdrawn its November lawsuit against Rocky Mountain Steel, they added.
"As Union Pacific pursues its merger with Norfolk Southern to create the nation's first transcontinental railroad, our ability to partner with Rocky Mountain Steel becomes even more critical as our merger is positioned to strengthen the nation's manufacturing core as well as domestic job growth," said Union Pacific Chief Executive Jim Vena.
