Maxis Berhad is ramping up its environmental sustainability efforts through enhanced solar adoption, cleaner operations, and greener networks, in line with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap target of 70% renewable capacity by 2050, Solar Quarter reports.
Marking World Environment Day, Maxis revealed significant progress across multiple fronts. The telco giant, which serves over 10.4mn mobile users and 780,000 homes, is leveraging its footprint to promote green energy solutions. Its Maxis Home Solar programme offers affordable rooftop solar options to households across Peninsular Malaysia, helping reduce both utility bills and carbon output.
“Managing our environmental footprint and enhancing operational efficiency are vital to Maxis’ long-term sustainability,” said Patrick Er, Director of Maxis Green Solutions. He affirmed the company’s commitment to accelerating renewable energy adoption in support of national climate goals.
Operationally, Maxis has adopted ISO 14001 environmental standards and deployed electric vehicles in its field fleet. It has also installed solar-powered EV charging stations at seven Technical Operations Centres and introduced off-grid solar solutions at rural base stations in Peninsular and East Malaysia, cutting dependence on diesel fuel in remote locations.
To boost energy efficiency, Maxis has modernised its network infrastructure, rolling out Centralised Self-Organising Network (C-SON) technology and high-efficiency rectifiers to reduce energy waste. Network consolidation and retirement of legacy systems, particularly in data centers and power plants, helped limit energy use growth to just 0.25% in 2024, despite network expansion.
The company also upgraded its office buildings with LED lighting, energy-efficient cabling, and better building management systems. These steps contributed to an 8% reduction in emissions from office operations in 2024. To promote sustainable commuting, Maxis introduced public transport subsidies for staff.
Through these wide-ranging initiatives, Maxis aims to create lasting environmental value and build a resilient, low-carbon future for Malaysia. Its green strategy encompasses both consumer and corporate action, aligning with broader national and global climate ambitions.
