Shares of utility companies were mostly lower Wednesday amid falling energy prices and in contrast with a broad uptick on U.S. equity markets.

Consolidated Edison was among the top losers after it announced it had agreed to issue 6,300,000 of its common shares.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, a conservative, said he would place an export tax on electricity sent to homes in Minnesota, Michigan and New York in response to tariffs from the Trump administration.
