Key takeaways
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has announced on social media platform X that production of the Cybercab robotaxi has begun. The development fulfils a long-standing promise by the electric vehicle manufacturer and comes in the middle of a period of falling global sales for Tesla.
Expansion plans for the robotaxi service
The futuristic two-door, two-seater sedan, first unveiled two years ago, has no traditional steering system or pedals. For mass production, regulatory exemptions from the US authorities are required. Musk expects the Cybercab to be cheaper than other Tesla models, although the exact price has not yet been disclosed.
Tesla’s robotaxi service, which operates as a mixed fleet with both human-controlled and autonomous vehicles, is scheduled for expansion in the first half of this year. Target cities include Phoenix, Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Las Vegas, building on the company’s existing operations that started last year in Austin. The service was recently launched in Dallas and Houston.
Financial outlook
Despite the ongoing expansion efforts, Tesla has not yet provided details on the size of the fleet or the share of vehicles operating without safety monitors. According to Musk, substantial revenue from the robotaxi business is not expected until 2027. (fc)
