Consumer companies rose as oil prices gave back some of their recent gains.

Newell Brands, maker of Sharpies and other consumer products, posted lower first-quarter sales but raised its full-year sales outlook on expectations that its turnaround strategy will soon drive a return to topline growth.

Beauty-products purveyor Estee Lauder said its turnaround was gaining traction, raising its fiscal-year outlook on expanded margins in the recent quarter and projecting continued sales growth in the coming year.

Kids' clothier Carter's appointed longtime Build-A-Bear Workshop chief Sharon Price John to lead the company as its new chief executive, effective mid-June.
