AbbVie will invest $1.4 billion in a pharmaceutical-manufacturing campus in Durham, N.C.

The biopharmaceutical company said the 185-acre campus, near Research Triangle Park, would begin construction this year, with completion expected by the end of 2028.

The investment is part of AbbVie's commitment to put $100 billion toward manufacturing and research and development in the U.S. over 10 years. It is the company's first major investment in North Carolina.

"Our investment in North Carolina represents a significant milestone for AbbVie as our largest capital investment to date and an important expansion of our manufacturing footprint into a new region of the United States," Chief Executive Officer Robert Michael said.

The campus will include advanced manufacturing and laboratory technologies leveraging artificial-intelligence, the company said. The initial phase of construction will focus on a warehouse, laboratories, and manufacturing facilities for small volume parenterals, or injectable pharmaceutical products with volumes less than 100 milliliters.

"When completed, this campus will serve as AbbVie's U.S. center of excellence for SVP manufacturing and deliver next-generation medicines to patients in the U.S. and worldwide," the company said.

The campus is expected to support 734 new hires over the next four years, as well as more than 2,000 construction jobs, AbbVie said.
