Atlassian Insiders Sell US$13m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution

In This Article:

Over the past year, many Atlassian Corporation (NASDAQ:TEAM) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Atlassian Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent sale by Anutthara Bharadwaj is the biggest insider sale of Atlassian shares that we've seen in the last year. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$239. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

In the last year Atlassian insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Does Atlassian Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Atlassian insiders own about US$24b worth of shares (which is 39% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
