Rekor Systems (NASDAQ:REKR) shareholders have earned a 72% CAGR over the last three years

Investing can be hard but the potential fo an individual stock to pay off big time inspires us. You won't get it right every time, but when you do, the returns can be truly splendid. Take, for example, the Rekor Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:REKR) share price, which skyrocketed 407% over three years. On top of that, the share price is up 49% in about a quarter.

Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

Rekor Systems isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

Rekor Systems actually saw its revenue drop by 26% per year over three years. So it's pretty amazing to see the stock price has zoomed up 72% per year in that time. This clear lack of correlation between revenue and share price is surprising to see in a money losing company. At the risk of upsetting holders, this does suggest that hope for a better future is playing a significant role in the share price action.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. A Different Perspective

Pleasingly, Rekor Systems' total shareholder return last year was 115%. That's better than the annualized TSR of 72% over the last three years. The improving returns to shareholders suggests the stock is becoming more popular with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term.
